Satthighar, Kavre:

Satthighar is home to more than 300 people across 60 houses - almost all of which have been completely flattened.  Ten families have seen loved ones killed in the quake and shelter needs are desperate.

Volunteers from the Banepa  branch of the Nepal  Red Cross set up two shelters for vulnerable women and children Friday (May 8).  The tents are among 2,000 donated by the Chinese Red Cross and distributed to the worst-hit areas of the quake zone.

Durga Shrestha, 30 and husband Shiba, 35, were among those whose home was destroyed. She said: “I was working in the field when the earthquake happened – I was so worried about the children as I knew they were at home. “I ran back and thankfully found them and my husband outside and safe but our house was gone.”

Earlier this week, all families in the village received food parcels from the Qatar Red Crescent which included two weeks’ worth of rice, lentils, canned fish, beans, pasta, oil, sugar and noodles.

Durga said before the Red Crescent food arrived, she had been feeding her five-year-old daughter Sadikshya and ten-year-old daughter Sushma from the rice they had been able to dig out from the rubble of their home. “The food package has been good for us but we are worried about shelter.  We are sleeping in a makeshift house with 12 other families and monsoon season is coming.”
