The Red Cross is reaching more and more people each day.
On 28 September 2018, the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi was struck by a series of earthquakes that triggered a powerful tsunami and caused a phenomenon called soil liquefication that destroyed an entire village in Palu. The humanitarian relief efforts have been increasing ever since, and the Red Cross is reaching new communities every day.
600 Indonesian Red Cross volunteers are working in affected communities, with a focus on providing medical support, distributing relief supplies, clean water and food, and evacuating survivors from the disaster zone.
Assessments conducted in the districts of Sigi, Kulawi, Palu and Donggala revealed that communities are in urgent need of medicine, tents, blankets, food (eggs, instant noodles, rice, biscuits), baby milk and diapers. The worst affected area is Banawa in Donggala district, where houses built along the shoreline have been swept away by the tsunami.
