Red Cross Races To Contain Cholera Crisis

ENG

The Red Cross had anticipated the risk of waterborne disease after the cyclone, prioritising clean water and sanitation services, and deploying an emergency field hospital with a 38-bed cholera treatment ward.

The threat of disease is piling further misery on cyclone survivors, many of whom have lost everything. To date, more than 29,000 survivors have received goods and services from the Red Cross, and we have planned deliveries of shelter kits to be distributed when people are returning home. Mozambique Red Cross teams have provided shelter supplies like tarpaulins and blankets, as well as food to more than 15,000 people in Beira and Buzi, and a major shipment of aid including kitchen kits, sleeping mats, water purification tablets for a further 37,000+ people has arrived. Relief supplies for up to 7,400 households are planned in and around in Buzi, where 800 households have already received assistance.

The cyclone has affected more than 1.85 million people, according to the UN, which also reports that nearly 129,000 people are now sheltering in 129 collective sites across Sofala, Manica, Zambezia and Tete. Tragically, 598 people have already been confirmed dead, and this number is expected to rise. More than 1,600 people were injured.
