I just came from Syria where I spent one week with the Syria Arab Red Crescent SARC, to explore how best the federation can best support the humanitarian efforts that SARC is carrying out for the moment, for the many thousands or rather millions displaced in Syria.
People who are fleeing from the conflict and trying to seek temporary shelter in schools, public buildings, mocks and parks.
The situation is very volatile. Bombardments are now every day and all over the country. Its day and night, sometimes all through the night.
We are doing what we can to get as many supplies in as possible. Be it food or be it non food items, hygiene kits, matrasses, blankets, household kits and kitchen sets for those who have lost everything and had to flee their homes.
People are crowding everywhere and we are also facing situations where in two months it will be winter and cold.
People have now fled in the hundreds of thousands to surrounding countries. In Jordan we are gathering all movements and national societies, be it Red Crescent or Red Cross to see how we can maximize our joint efforts to provide assistance to all who have fled.
I call upon all countries outside this region to see what you can do to support these efforts. We need resources. The situation is becoming more desperate by the day.
