Situation and Pakistan Red Crescent Society emergency relief distribution
The flooding in Pakistan, which began early September and continues, has affected more than two million people across 2 provinces and 1 state along the eastern stretch of Pakistan. The death toll stands at 301, with 507 people injured.
The flood waters entered Sindh province in southern Pakistan on 16 September. It is anticipated that when the flooding reaches the end of its course around 20 September, the total number of people affected will reach the 3 million mark.
Given the scale of the disaster and the substantial cross section of immediate and longer term needs - destruction of homes and livelihoods - it is clear that the humanitarian community has a significant role to play in supporting the authorities to aid affected communities.
Food, safe drinking water, emergency shelter and medical care are the immediate concerns. Rehabilitation and/or construction of water sources, latrines and homes are vital longer term assistance required for affected communities, along with food security and the restoration of livelihoods.
In this connection, the Pakistan Red Crescent Society has already mounted a relief operation to support 13,000 families across Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The existing operation is being supported by IFRC through its Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF).
