Emergency appeal for 800,000 CHF to assist 7000 Mongolian herder households

ENG

The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for more than 800,000 CHF to assist 7000 Mongolian herder households who are seriously affected by extreme winter conditions. The footage is taken in Uvs province, Mongolia during distribution of relief goods to herders by the Red Cross.

Mrs Bayankhand Myagmar, a 50 years old herder, has lost more than 400 of her 700 sheep, goats and cattle. She is doing everything she can to save the animals that are still alive, but most of them are too weak to survive, and she may lose them all before the winter is over at the end of May.

There are hundreds of carcasses around her dwellings. In a desperate last effort to save her animals she has filled her own ger (herder tent) with animals that are too weak to stand on their feet. Most of them no longer raise their heads, some of them are already dead. Inside the ger she explains her desperate situation to the Red Cross workers and explains crying that without her livestock she cannot survive on the grasslands. The Red Cross gives her basic food assistance to support the family through the difficulties.

It is estimated that over 40 per cent of the total herder population are impacted by adverse weather conditions (UN 15 March 2016). Approximately 11,800 herder households with less than 100 animals are considered particularly vulnerable. 359,981 animals had perished as of 10 March 2016, and more than a million animals are likely to perish before the end of May.
