Mali: Thousands of people in need at the border

ENG

The conflict in Northern Mali has driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. Around 175,000 are estimated to be internally displaced, while more than quarter of a million has crossed into neighbouring countries, mainly to Burkina Faso. This refugee influx comes in the middle of a severe food crisis that has left close to 20 million people in the Sahel region food insecure.

In Northern Burkina Faso, the Mentao camp, divided into three areas, hosts around 20,000 Malians while the total number in the country is estimated by the Red Cross to be around 60,000. Censuses have been carried out in mid-August to establish the exact number. Refugees started crossing the border in February, largest numbers arriving in March and April.
